Sweetest Day is Saturday October 18th
Sweetest Day is really all about the sweets. The holiday, commonly referred to as a Hallmark holiday, by many people, really is a Candy Holiday. A consortium of candy makers planned the first Sweetest Day, 84 years ago. The committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to orphans, elderly, and the newsboys in Cleveland, Ohio. The move was one part philanthropy and one part marketing. The candy men or Confectioners were hopeful that people would follow their example and buy candy for friends, neighbors, children, parents, and lovers.
In modern times, the holiday is more like the Valentine’s Day of autumn. Chocolate, flowers, candy and a card exchanged between lovers and married couples. In 2006, Hallmark marketed 151 cards for the holiday. In certain parts of the country the holiday is very much about candy and in others less so. Either way, it seems that a holiday started by Candy Men, really should involve some luscious treats for one and all. So send your sweetheart a gift this sweetest day. Have you ever wondered where some of the well-known holidays (besides Christmas and Thanksgiving) have originated from? I know I have, and I'm here to help! Father's Day is one of those holiday's that you merely celebrate but have no idea how it started.
Brief History: Father's Day is a holiday that is meant for children to honor their father's. In Spokane, Washington a woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a sermon about Mother's Day and wondered why there was not a day to celebrate fathers. Having been raised by her father since her mother's death, Miss Dodd decided she would hold a day to celebrate her father's impact in her life.
Since her father was born in June, she chose to hold the first ever Father's Day celebration on June 19th, 2010. In New York City a national committee for Father's Day was formed in 1923. It wasn't until Nixon came to office that he made it a day of national observance in 1972.
So Father's Day came to be, from a girl who believed her father deserved recognition for all his hard work and love he had given her and her siblings over the years.
Fun fact:
- Roses are the official flower of Father's Day. Red roses for those father's who are still living, white for those who have passed.
So be sure to spoil your dad on Father's Day. If you have been blessed to have your father in your life, then let him know how much you truly care about him. Spend some time with him and give him a gift he can cherish forever. Because a father is forever, and he deserves to be honored!Labels: Father's Day, father's day gift ideas, gifts for him

Thoughtful Father's Day Ideas
This year for Father's Day get Dad something he will really like. Put down the Disney Tie or the boxer shorts and really get creative. Think about Dad's hobbies or interests. Chances are there is the perfect gift basket out there, one that will inspire him, delight him and show him that you are the Best Child ever – just like he always tells everyone.
If Dad is the self proclaimed King of the Grill (despite what Mom says) consider getting him an assortment of great grill tools. The right tools, as Dad will always say, make the job! If Dad already has all the tools any grill master could dream of handling, think about a gift assortment of sauces and dry rubs. This will give him some new tastes and flavors to test out for the balance of the summer.
If Dad is a beer lover, consider planning a trip to a local brewery or consider sending him a gift assortment of great micro brews, a beer making kit or some snacks designed to compliment his favor beverage.
Is Dad the green thumb in the family? A new set of gardening tools and a book about horticultural would be a great way to treat Dad this Father's Day. Has Dad developed a passion for outdoor music, consider a new wine basket or backpack, a great and classy way to enjoy the outdoor tunes and some vino as the sun sets.
With a little careful thought and planning, finding the right gift and a gift that Dad will actually enjoy is easy and completely stress free.Labels: father's day gift ideas, father's Day gifts, gifts for him
