When I had my first baby I received about 10 lullaby CD's and close to 20 stuffed animals at my baby shower. While these things are nice I really didn't need them. What I really wanted were practical things. One gift I received that I really appreciated was a baby gift basket.

A baby gift basket is a gift that I now give whenever I go to a baby shower. It is a very versatile gift that can include things like baby wipes, diapers, diaper rash ointment, bottles, baby Tylenol and gas drops, etc. These things are all things that new babies need and parents don't want to have to spend lots of money on. I loved the idea of a baby gift basket and now I like to buy them for all my expecting friends.

One reason baby gift baskets are so fun is that parents like to buy cute little outfits or unusual toys when they see them. The more useful the things are the more of a chore it is to have to purchase them yourself and the more enjoyable it is to have someone else purchase it for you. A baby gift basket is the perfect way to get a combination of practical things and something cute or unusual.

Great things to include in a baby gift basket are things like food, bottles, pacifiers, onesies, socks, diapers, lotions, soaps, medications like gas drops and ibuprofen, a thermometer, bibs, and rattles.

A fantastic idea for a baby gift basket is to include a gift certificate to a store where the mom has registered. There is always something that is registered for and that doesn't get purchased that she would be able to get with a gift certificate later.

New mothers are also in need of a little attention. So much attention gets put on the new baby and often times the new mother gets forgotten. She has just gone through a major ordeal. A good way to show her a little extra care is to include some things for the new mother in the baby gift basket. Pampering products like scented lotions and bath products, a subscription to a magazine you know she'll love, or a gift certificate to her favorite store or spa.

Another thing to include in a baby gift basket is gifts for older children. Older children can feel left out when a new baby is getting new things and so much attention. Wrap up a separate gift with the older child's name on it and include it in the baby gift basket. Then when the parents go home from the shower the older child will have something to open and not concentrate so much on how many things the new baby is getting. Parents will be so grateful that you remembered their other children, and your baby gift basket will be the talk of the shower.

Baby gift baskets are a very versatile gift idea. They lend themselves to almost anything and as a result you can really make the most of every gift giving opportunity and baby shower.
